Wind Mitigation Inspection

An evaluation of your roof structure and how it performs in high winds, documented on the Florida Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form. It is not a pass or fail assessment. It is an informational report for you and your insurer, and it is the single largest discount available on a Florida homeowners policy.

01

What a wind mitigation inspection is

The inspector assesses how securely the roof is attached to the home, and examines windows and doors for features such as hurricane shutters or impact ratings. Nothing here passes or fails. The report is an informational evaluation for both you and your insurance company, and the insight it gives you about your own home lets you improve hurricane preparedness where it is actually needed.

02

What the form documents

Seven categories drive the credits: building code compliance year, roof covering type and permit date, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connection (toe nail, clips, single wraps or double wraps), roof geometry, secondary water resistance, and opening protection: whether windows, doors and skylights are impact-rated or shuttered.

03

How we document it

We inspect the attic to verify the actual roof-to-wall connection and deck attachment rather than assuming from the build year, pull permit history where it affects the result, photograph every category the form requires, and complete the OIR-B1-1802 form for direct submission to your carrier or agent. A wind mitigation is typically valid for 5 years, saving you money now and years to come.

Wind Mitigation Inspection: what we evaluate.

The inspection identifies the features that make your home more resilient in a windstorm or hurricane: impact-resistant windows, reinforced roofing, storm shutters. Insurers reward those measures, and for many South Florida homes the annual premium reduction exceeds the cost of the inspection several times over, every year the form stays valid.
